Poeppert: Hand Cut Hard Work Make Dreams Come True

Gene Poeppert always knew he wanted to run his own business. While helping a friend during a holiday craft show, Gene befriended an artist whose kiosk was filled with hand-crafted flagstone creations. Gene was fascinated with this form of art and inquired about the process.

At the end of the show, the artist offered to teach Gene how to make his own works of art on hand-cut flagstone. He accepted the offer, started training, and achieved his dream in September 2016 by establishing Flagstone Reflections.

Since Gene needed a place to work on his stones, he converted his two-car garage into a workshop and storage facility. “It’s very time consuming to make a batch of stones,” he said. “Each one is uniquely hand cut so no two are identical.” This heavy-duty work requires chisels and hammers.

Once the stone is cut to size, it’s sculptured to enhance the subject matter of a lithographic print. Gene only uses high-quality lithographs from associated artists or those produced by reputable publishing companies.

Here, Gene explains what’s involved:

• With ink binding and emulsive extraction and adhesive agents, the print images are meticulously separated from the paper substrate of the lithograph and worked onto the surface of the stone.

• The paperless medium placed on the stone’s surface flows into all the surface features of the stone to produce a dimensional and textured perspective that’s not apparent with the lithographic image.

• When the extraction and adhesion agent cures, each piece is sanded around the edges and then hand-painted to create a smooth transition around the perimeter of the stone.

• Each piece is then sealed with non-petroleum based polyurethane to protect and preserve the stone’s image.

The entire process takes five days. Every stone must be done “perfectly,” Gene said, before it’s added to the collection of items for sale. His detailed flagstone creations come in a variety of sizes and scenes. Nature lovers will appreciate those with bears, birds, fish, horses, raccoons, reindeer, turkeys, and wolves. Among the landscapes are oceans and lakes in different seasons. Also popular are the ones with dogs.
