HILL: A FAMILY AFFAIR
My name is Carol Hill, owner and designer of country primitive wood at Darlington Creek Mercantile. My crafting journey started over 35 years ago when I became a stay at home mom. In the beginning, I enjoyed sewing curtains and making dolls. My husband John had a friend who was in the antique business at the time. He made towel bars for our oak washstands. I asked him if he could cut 6 inch pine hearts for a project I was working on. That started my love of woodcutting. He later suggested that my husband buy me a scrolling saw. That Christmas, under the tree was a Craftsman scrolling saw. Needless to say, the sewing machine has collected a lot of dust over the years.
For many years, I sold my creations at local high school craft shows. But over the years, we have traveled to over seven states selling my wares. One of our more popular items that we are known for are our slab bears, scarecrows, and snowmen. Our outhouses are another craft we are known for. They were originally made out of barnwood, but over the years that wood has become harder to find. 8 years ago, we introduced a new line of brighter summer merchandise. This line consists of palm trees with a slab bottom and landscape lights with parrots or flamingos, personalized for your patio or deck.
After 22 years of participating in Christmas in the Woods, we are excited to announce that we have moved to the August show. We are thankful for this new opportunity and we are looking forward to seeing lots of familiar faces.
First and foremost, I want to thank God for blessing me with a talent that has helped my husband and I raise four boys; Chad, Johnny, Cain, and Cody. We are grateful for the beautiful women our boys have by their side; Kim, Lindsay, Mandy, and Kate. Our boys have blessed us with 6 grandchildren! My boys have dedicated so much time over the years to help us paint, cut, and sell our crafts. My sister-in-law, Terri has stuck by our side and helped with painting, sanding, and tying bows on this crafting journey. So many to thank, for their devotion to help us over the years. A special thank you to my mother and dad, I love you.
I want to thank Shaker Woods, Lana and Rob Wilt, Sam and Sue Ferguson, and Ken and Linda McGaffic for blessing me with the opportunity to meet such great fellow vendors and customers over the last 22 years.
Seek joy in what you give, not in what you get. My heart and home are feeling blessed at this point in our lives! Stop by and say hi.
