Celebrating Our 18th Year of Schooling/Craft Classes
Once again, the Shaker Woods Schoolhouse will be open for classes during the three-weekend festival. Our school, now in its 18th year, is run in the tradition of the shaker community and known as the “Children’s Order“.
All classes are related to the craft that the teacher exhibits at the festival. Classes will be one and one-half hours and you may safely leave your child in the schoolroom while you shop. The teacher will be sure that your child is monitored until you return. Class size, age limits and costs are determined by each instructor. Please adhere to the age limit so that your child gets the most from the class. Remember these classes are for children (without parents present). All classes are $10 each.
Please stop by the Schoolhouse early in the day to sign your child up as they tend to fill up quickly. Samples of each class project will be on display.
Classes were first held in 1992 and entitled “The Children’s Order.” This was the term used by the Shaker Villages to denote their schooling system. Classes for 2010 are as follows:
AUGUST 14 & 15 • “Back Strap Weaving” (11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.) Instructor: Linda Surace Ages 8 and up • “Working With Gourds” (2-3:30 p.m.) Instructor: Mary Maberg Ages 5 and up
AUGUST 21 & 22 • “Sunday Toys” (11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.) Instructor: Sue Usner Any age that will stay w/o mother • “Parachute Pete” (2-3:30 p.m.) Instructor: Tina Tipton Naymick Ages 8 and up
AUGUST 28 & 29 • “Beginner Knitting” (11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.) Instructor: Elaine Krall Ages 8 and up • “Sunday Toys” (2-3:30 p.m.) Instructor: Sue Usner Any age that will stay w/o mother
