Alan and Nancy Stegall have produced pottery since 1975. They attended classes through Auburn University in Alabama, Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Tennessee and many workshops and symposiums. Their pottery is made from high fired stoneware clay and fired in electric kilns.

The Stegalls utilize a combination of styles and construction techniques including assemblages, extrusions, slab work, hand building and wheel throwing. Design and form are emphasized as much as surface decoration. Overlapping glaze patterns are used to complement the shape of each piece. Their most recent work consists of simple forms decorated with patterns from nature, inspired by and reflecting the landscape of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Most of what they create is functional, but art and sculptural pieces are also available. The Stegalls have won several awards in art and craft categories.

Alan has been involved in artistic endeavors since third grade. He took high school art classes and in his first year of college majored in architecture. Joining the Air Force in 1972 interrupted his education but enabled him to pursue sculpting, emphasizing free-form sand candles. Reassigned to Hawaii, he attended the University of Hawaii where he concentrated in the ceramic arts. Graduating in 1979 and returning to the mainland, he expanded his skills through workshops with some of the country’s foremost ceramic artists. He has developed his own unique style through a combination of construction methods and several disciplines, having studied engineering, ergonomics, design, physics, chemistry and art. Alan also earned an MBA with an emphasis in art marketing. His thesis was “The Business of Art.” He has written several articles emphasizing the business skills necessary for an artist to make a living pursuing artistic endeavors.

Nancy is a self-taught potter who expanded her talents through working with several nationally known ceramic artists. Her emphasis is on designing pieces that are matched to a particular function but executed in new ways. Examples include octagonal silverware caddies and several chip & dip designs. All are unique in design and sculptural in form.

Alan and Nancy have been making pottery together for more than 40 years. Combining Nancy’s hand-building strengths with Alan’s throwing skills, they currently produce 80+ items. Their most popular line consists of grandparent mugs with 65 stock names. Custom names are also available.

Their work is marketed at art fairs throughout the eastern United States and represented by numerous galleries and gift shops across the country. They have participated in wholesale trade shows since 1992.

The Stegalls live and work in the beautiful mountains of East Tennessee and in booth 74 at Shaker Woods.
