Standyard-Davis: Burlap Junkies...It’s All in the Name

4/20/2020

Laurel & Brenna in their workspaceWe are a mother-daughter team that have a passion for creating one of a kind, fun, colorful painted burlap door hangings. We both live in East Palestine where we each have a work station at our home where we create our door hangers from burlap. Each door hanger is designed and hand painted by Laurel (mom), who is a graduate from the Pittsburgh Art Institute and Brenna (daughter), an Assistant Administrator at Christian House Assisted Living. Our wonderful spouses Bob and Jim are also part of the Burlap crew. We got our inspiration as small gift boutique owners in East Palestine where we featured local artists and crafters like ourselves to sell and share local art and crafts. I, Brenna made floral arrangements and wreaths while my mom, Laurel was an accomplished painter and seamstress. I started experimenting with burlap in wreaths and Laurel was making burlap Christmas stockings to hang on the door. One day Laurel decided to make a snowman and it was the start of our obsession. Over the past three years we have made more than a hundred patterns and custom designs for our customers including a hot air balloon, a certain college penguin, and The Griswold’s station wagon from the National Lampoons Christmas Vacation. Although we no longer have the store we continue to show and sell our hangers at local shows and craft fairs. Over the years the patterns and technique have changed and grown. We now offer personalization on the many seasonal and holiday hangers. What does our future hold? We plan to continue doing what we love, creating hand painted door hangers together, mother and daughter. This is our first year at the Shaker Woods Festival and we would like to thank Lana for the opportunity. Come check out our burlap door hangers at booth number 157.
